Acupuncture: A Healing Art

As described by the Mayo Clinic, acupuncture is a traditional form of Chinese medicine in which thin needles are inserted into the skin as a means of stimulating nerves, muscle, and connective tissue.

When used as a means of treating pain (which is most often the case with acupuncture), blood flow to the treated region increases and the body's natural painkillers may work more effectively and efficiently.

According to Sandra Wilkes, Diplomate in Oriental Medicine and practitoner of acupuncture at Blue Valley Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine in Overland Park, Kan., acupuncture may used to treat a variety of ailments, ranging from generalized pain to stress-related tension. Wilkes notes that, while acupuncture is not a suitable replacement for emergency care, it is highly effective in both relieving and preventing less serious ailments.

Acupuncture may also serve a spiritual purpose, as its practice is known to balance what is known as "qi" (pronounced CHEE), which is the flow of energy through one's body. Qi may also be referred to as "the life force." According to Manhattan, Kan., -based acupuncture practice Konza Healing's website, , acupuncture uses a meridian system known as the Qi pathways that "permeates the body and the internal organs."

Acupuncture has been used and studied for thousands of years, and scientists and medical professionals continue to explore its applications.
